EU calls for review of revocation of José Daniel Ferrer’s and Félix Navarro’s conditional release

Regretting the Cuban authorities’ decision to revoke the conditional release granted in January to human rights defender José Daniel Ferrer and activist Félix Navarro, the spokesman for the European External Action Service called on the authorities on Wednesday 30 April to review these decisions and release all those detained for exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

The EU reiterates its calls for the full respect for human rights and the guarantee that all citizens, including those with dissenting views, can freely exercise their fundamental freedoms”, he added in a press release.

In another press release, the European Parliament’s Human Rights Subcommittee Chair Mounir Satouri (Greens/EFA, French), called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of José Daniel Ferrer and Félix Navarro and for guarantees of their physical safety and protection.

Both the EEAS spokesman and Mr Satouri warned that the EU would continue to monitor the human rights situation in Cuba and would use all established mechanisms to voice its concerns, in accordance with the principles of the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement.
