On Friday 2 May, the spokesman for the European External Action Service, Anouar El Anouni, called on Israel to respect Syria’s independence, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity and the terms of the 1974 disengagement agreement.
Mr El Anouni called on all those involved to show the utmost restraint and avoid violence, to ensure the protection of civilians and to respect international law, including humanitarian law.
Israel has struck the country on several occasions, including near the presidential palace, in order to put pressure on the Syrian government and force it to protect the Druze minority.
Condemning the violence, particularly in Jaramana, the EU called for the protection of civilians. “This violence is a clear reminder that state institutions must assume their responsibility for maintaining order and protecting the population throughout Syria, and must continue their ongoing efforts to promote stability and prioritise work on transitional justice and reconciliation”, he stressed.
Sectarian clashes between Druze fighters and Syrian forces have reportedly left at least a hundred people dead. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
