The CLECAT association, which represents European freight transport and logistics professionals, supports “the urgent need to decarbonise maritime transport” and called for “a strong, effective, and globally coordinated response from the International Maritime Organization (IMO)” at the 83rd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, on Monday 7 April.
All week long, the 176 Member States are meeting at the IMO headquarters in London to discuss the measures to be taken to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality in the maritime sector ‘by or around’ 2050.
CLECAT supports EU instruments such as the ‘FuelEU Maritime’ regulation on renewable and low-carbon fuels (see EUROPE 13579/10) and the ‘Emissions Trading Scheme’ (‘ETS’) (see EUROPE 13605/8), but warns of the risks of carbon leakage, competitive distortions or the displacement of port activities outside the EU.
CLECAT believes that “the upcoming negotiations must result in a robust international instrument that aligns with the EU’s climate ambition while safeguarding European competitiveness and operational fairness”. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
