07/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – Frenchman Olivier Guersent has resigned from his post as Director-General of Competition at the European Commission. His retirement will take effect in September, although he could continue his career with the European Union institution for another five years. Having turned down several offers to join the private sector, Mr Guersent intends to devote his spare time to updating the ‘European Competition Law’ series of the Oxford University Press and, perhaps, to teaching at the Institut d'études politiques in France. After joining the Commission in 1992, he progressively climbed the hierarchical ladder, notably as head of the private office of European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier from February 2010 to June 2014. He was one of the key architects of the ‘supervision’ and ‘resolution’ pillars of the euro area banking union. (MB)
