20/03/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 20 March, the European Union congratulated Zambia after it acceded to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), becoming the 92nd State party to this text aimed at abolishing the death penalty. Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, the ICCPR was ratified by Zambia in 1984. “We welcome the entry into force of the Protocol on 19 March 2025, concluding the process towards irrevocable abolition of the death penalty for all crimes”, said a spokesperson for the European External Action Service in a press release. “With this milestone, Zambia sets an example to reinforce the strong abolitionist trend, and the growing worldwide support for the abolition of the death penalty”, they added.
