Several MEPs call for sanctions to be imposed on Milorad Dodik

In a letter dated Tuesday 18 March, around twenty MEPs issued a call to “initiate sanctions” against Milorad Dodik, the President of the Bosnian Serb Republic, in view of his separatist tendencies and his rejection of the authority of the Bosnian Constitutional Court.

Addressed to the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, the letter calls for “swift EU-action” to prevent Milorad Dodik's actions, which could “destabilize” the region, particularly in view of him “closely aligning” with Vladimir Putin.

MEPs are calling on willing Member States to impose sanctions on Milorad Dodik and his allies in order to match the gravity of the situation.

In February, Milorad Dodik was sentenced to one year in prison and banned from holding office for six years (see EUROPE 13588/7).

In early March, the European External Action Service (EEAS) issued a statement declaring that these laws “undermine the constitutional and legal order of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the functionality of the country’s institutions and threaten fundamental freedoms of its citizens(see EUROPE 13594/17).
