According to data published on Tuesday 21 January by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, private investment in climate change mitigation measures in the EU amounted to €95.3 billion in 2023.
This corresponds to 0.55% of the EU’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Lithuania and Denmark recorded the highest shares of private investment in climate change mitigation, with 1.5% of GDP. Latvia and Sweden followed with 1.2% of GDP.
In all other EU countries, this figure was below 1% of GDP. Cyprus and Ireland are the countries that recorded the lowest figure with less than 0.1% of GDP.
While between 2005 and 2016, investment in mitigation policies tended to stagnate at around 0.5% of GDP, there was considerable growth until 2021, when a peak of 0.64% was measured, before a slight decline in 2022 and 2023.
In 2022 and 2023, investment in climate change mitigation corresponded to 0.56% and 0.55% of GDP respectively.
