23/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 23 January, MEPs adopted by a show of hands a resolution strongly disapproving of the death sentences handed down in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in particular the sentencing of Belgian military expert Jean-Jacques Wondo. Expressing their deep concern at the deteriorating health of Mr Wondo, who has been imprisoned for almost nine months for alleged involvement in a failed coup d’état in the DRC in May 2024, MEPs are calling for his immediate release and for urgent access to medical care. Reaffirming its categorical opposition to the death penalty, the European Parliament is urging the Congolese government to re-establish a moratorium on executions and to take steps to abolish the death penalty.
