EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Iran

European Parliament denounces unrestrained repression of human rights

On Thursday 23 January, in a joint resolution adopted by the Greens/EFA, S&D, Renew Europe, EPP and ECR groups by 556 votes to 6 with 42 abstentions, the European Parliament condemned the Iranian regime’s unrestrained” repression of human rights, in particular the targeting of women activists.

MEPs strongly condemn the death sentences passed on social worker Pakhshan Azizi and women’s rights activist Wrisha Moradi for ‘armed rebellion against the state’.

Parliament also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all unjustly imprisoned human rights defenders and political prisoners, including European nationals. Strongly condemning the use of hostage diplomacy, it calls on the EU and its Member States to work collectively for their release.

MEPs also strongly condemn the murder of German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmahd and call on Iran to provide details of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Finally, according to Parliament, the EU Council should add the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the list of terrorist organisations and extend EU sanctions to all those responsible for human rights violations.
