European Commission adopts its technical standards for European cross-border digital identity wallets

On Thursday 28 November, the European Commission adopted several implementing regulations concerning the basic functionalities and certification of digital identity wallets (eIDs) as part of the European digital identity programme. These regulations should enable Member States to develop and deploy their own national wallets by the end of 2026.

Four implementing regulations set “uniform standards to ensure interoperability, security and protection of personal data”. Users will be able to control the information they share via a solution that is neither tracked nor profiled, and that incorporates a “confidentiality dashboard” guaranteeing transparency on how and with whom wallet information is shared.

These digital wallets will enable citizens and businesses to access most online services within the EU with a national digital ID.

They should also make it possible to open bank accounts, make payments and store all digital documents, including official documents, centrally.

The texts will enter into force 20 days after their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
