On Thursday 28 November in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted a joint resolution from the EPP, S&D, ECR, Renew Europe and Greens/EFA groups - with 473 votes in favour, 23 against and 98 abstentions - concerning the deteriorating situation in Hong Kong, and more specifically the cases of Jimmy Lai and 45 activists recently convicted under the National Security Law (see EUROPE 13431/24).
In this resolution, the European Parliament calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai, who has been detained since 2020 (see EUROPE 13399/8) and whose trial began in 2023.
It also denounces the convictions for subversion of 45 pro-democracy politicians, activists and journalists in the so-called ‘Hong Kong 47’ case.
More generally, the resolution once again condemns the deterioration in fundamental freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong following the adoption of the National Security Law.
The Parliament calls for the repeal of this law and condemns its extraterritorial application and the exploitation of Hong Kong’s position in world trade to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Russia, Iran and North Korea.
