26/11/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 26 November, the European Parliament announced that it had strengthened its commitment in support of sustainability by approving a significant increase in efforts to further reduce its ecological footprint. A press release indicates that the Parliament’s Bureau “updated its environmental policy and set new environmental targets for the 2024–2029 term”. The new targets to be met by 2029 are as follows: a “carbon footprint reduction of at least 55% [in] tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per full-time equivalent (tCO2e/FTE) compared to 2006”, a “55% decrease in energy consumption (kWh/m²) compared to 2012”, “[r]aising the share of energy consumption from renewable sources to 80%”, and an “85% reduction in paper consumption compared to 2012”. The European Parliament has also included a qualitative biodiversity indicator. (SP)
