The social network Bluesky, an unofficial competitor of X, is under increased scrutiny from the European Commission, which suspects it is not complying with certain rules of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
“All platforms operating in the EU, even the smallest that are below the threshold (of the DSA), which is the case with Bluesky, must have a dedicated page on their website indicating the number of users they have in the EU and where they are legally established. This is not currently the case with Bluesky”, said Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier on Monday 25 November.
Because it does not have enough users to be considered a ‘Very Large Online Platform’ (‘VLOP’), Bluesky is effectively exempt from the strictest DSA obligations.
At this stage, the Commission is relying on the national competent authorities and the EU27 coordinators to monitor Bluesky as it expands across the EU. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
