EU and Amman to step up cooperation

On Thursday 21 November, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced the forthcoming conclusion of a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership agreement between the EU and Jordan, “an indispensable partner” for the EU and “an anchor of stability and wisdom in the eye of the storm”.

At a press conference in Amman with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Mr Borrell stressed their “will to increase [their] Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership agreement”. “Today, our teams are working to make this possible by the end of the year”, he added.

According to the head of European diplomacy, this partnership will enable progress to be made in cooperation in key areas such as security and defence, trade, investment, energy, digital technology and human development.

The High Representative also announced that the EU would be providing macro-financial assistance of €500 million to support Jordan in its threefold modernisation process (political, economic and public administration reform).

According to Mr Borrell, the new agreement with Amman will form part of a stronger EU commitment in the Mediterranean. “The EU is committed to supporting Jordan and the region as much as necessary”, he added. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
