21/11/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 21 November, the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets approved aid of €116 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to support Germany and Italy, which were hit by flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in May 2024 and in Valle d’Aosta in June 2024. MEPs considered that EU aid could be higher, given the number of natural disasters in Europe. Germany will receive €112.1 million, and €4 million will go to Italy. The aid is intended to cover part of the costs of emergency and recovery operations, including the repair of damaged infrastructure, the safeguarding of cultural heritage and clean-up operations. The full Parliament must now vote on the assistance in plenary session. The financial aid will be paid after final approval by the European Parliament and the EU Council. (FS)
