‘European Nuclear Alliance’ will meet on 15 October to defend principle of technological neutrality before future European Commission

More than 6 months after their last meeting in March (see EUROPE 13363/3), the countries of the ‘European Nuclear Alliance’ will meet in Luxembourg on 15 October on the sidelines of the Energy Council to send “a strong message” to the future European Commission and ask it to consider nuclear energy in its legislative action.

This meeting of the Alliance, bringing together 11 EU countries in favour of the principle of “technological neutrality” in European legislation, will result in a joint declaration. “We can expect some major announcements”, said the office of the French Minister for Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, who was behind the creation of the Alliance in 2022.

The European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, will also be present. “Observer” countries will also be able to join the meeting, as was previously the case for Belgium and Italy.

In addition, the French Minister has requested that a public exchange of views on the forthcoming delegated act on low-carbon hydrogen (see EUROPE 13492/14) be included on the Council’s agenda, during which she will take a stance against “any form of energy discrimination” in order to develop the hydrogen sector in Europe.
