On Saturday 28 September, the European Commission pledged a new contribution of €260 million to GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, for the period 2026-2027.
This funding aims to support GAVI’s goal of protecting 500 million children worldwide by 2030, strengthening immunisation systems and improving global health security by increasing the capacity to respond to epidemics.
“We deeply appreciate the EU’s leadership, its partnership with Gavi supported countries matching their investment in vaccine costs, and enhanced commitment to Gavi’s mission which contributes to a safer, healthier world for all”, praised the Chairman of the GAVI Board, José Manuel Barroso, in a statement.
On Saturday, the Commission also promised to increase the European Union’s initial humanitarian aid budget for 2024 to €1.8 billion.
Additional humanitarian aid packages have been pledged to combat food insecurity in Africa (€41 million) and Afghanistan (€40 million), for Sudan (€69 million), Palestinians (€45 million) and Venezuela (€18 million).
