30/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – Greenpeace and WWF published a new tool for monitoring the implementation of governments’ commitments to the Global Biodiversity Framework on Monday 30 September, just a few weeks before the United Nations COP16 (21 October to 1 November in Cali, Colombia), where the EU and its Member States will be present. The signatory countries of the Kunming-Montreal framework agreement on global biodiversity in 2022 have agreed to update or revise their national plans in line with the global target. The tool developed by Greenpeace and WWF is based on these updates. Problem: of the 196 parties to the Global Biodiversity Framework, only 10% of countries have submitted their updated national plans. On the EU side, Ursula von der Leyen intends to encourage action in favour of nature through a system of “nature credits” (see EUROPE 13482/14). (FS)
