Member States reiterate that agreements binding EU to United Kingdom must be applied before any new discussions can begin

30/09/2024 (Agence Europe)On Monday 30 September, the Member States’ ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) discussed relations between the EU and the United Kingdom, while the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will welcome the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to Brussels on Wednesday 2 October. The Member States had to coordinate their positions once again. “It is important that all Member States are fully informed, that they receive the details of the meeting and that they know what the messages will be”, summarised one diplomat. “What the Commission says or proposes must be the subject of in-depth discussion and agreement with the Member States”, who want above all “to ensure that all existing agreements are fully implemented and to decide collectively on the areas in which [the EU has] an interest in strengthening this relationship”.
