19/09/24 (Agence Europe) – EU fisheries ministers will debate, on Monday 23 September, the level of total allowable catches (TACs) for anchovy in Iberian Atlantic waters from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025. The European Commission proposed a final TAC for this species of 9,449 tonnes, a 54% reduction on the TAC for the previous fishing year. In addition, the Commission is proposing to limit catches of the southern component of the stock to 969 tonnes starting the 1st of October and to ban quota exchanges between Member States. Spain, in particular, but also Portugal, reject such a reduction in the TAC, as shown by a note from the Council of the EU in preparation for European ministers debate (see EUROPE 13485/18).
