19/09/24 (Agence Europe) – In a written question sent on Wednesday 18 September, MEPs from the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) expressed their concern about the “censorship plans” for social media platform X pursued by former Internal Market Commissioner, Thierry Breton. Mr Breton sent a letter to Elon Musk at the beginning of August, urging him to ensure that X complies with EU regulations and effectively moderates content on its platform. In their written question, the MEPs talk about “direct pressure” being applied “under the pretext of managing harmful content”. They are asking the Commission to clarify whether “any other Commission officials have [...] used their position to exert pressure [...] on the major social media platforms to enforce specific content moderation actions”.
