19/09/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 September, MEPs demanded that the Belarusian authorities “immediately and unconditionally” release all political prisoners and people arbitrarily detained in the country. In the joint resolution adopted by The Left, Greens/EFA, Renew Europe, ECR, S&D and EPP groups by 549 votes to 21 with 37 abstentions, MEPs call on the authorities to respect the human rights of those in detention and to provide them with the necessary medical care. The European Parliament also hopes that the EU and the Member States will broaden and strengthen sanctions against the individuals and entities responsible for the repression in Belarus and that they will work to ensure that the Lukashenka regime is held accountable for its crimes.
