19/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – On the margins of the European Parliament’s plenary session, Hungarian Minister for European [Union] Affairs János Bóka announced on Wednesday, 18 September, that his country would join the Netherlands in its effort to withdraw from the acquis communautaire on asylum and migration when European treaties are revised in future. He indicated that drastic measures are needed to curb illegal immigration. Adding that the necessary legal and administrative measures would be taken, he offered his assurance that Hungary would remain a committed Member State within the Schengen area for the free movement of persons. That same day, the European Commission indicated that it had officially received the same request from the Netherlands (see EUROPE 13485/16). (SP)
