At the EU Council’s meeting of energy experts on Tuesday 17 September, the European Commission presented a draft non-binding instrument aimed at initiating discussions on a global commitment to energy storage at COP29, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, between 11 and 22 November.
This initiative is part of the extension and implementation of the target to triple renewable energies (see EUROPE 13306/6), which will require an increase in global storage capacity.
On 30 April this year, the G7 countries made a commitment in this direction, setting a target of increasing energy storage sixfold, to reach 1,500 GW by 2030.
The draft non-binding instrument has yet to be finalised. The Commission will then forward it to the Council for approval.
At this meeting, the energy experts were also briefed on the energy aspects of the COP29 discussions.
The EU Council’s draft general conclusions on preparations for COP29 will be discussed by environment experts on Friday 20 September. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
