13/09/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 13 September, the European Commission published a new report assessing the progress made in recent years in terms of the quality and safety of medical radiology practices. The EU JUST CT study was conducted between 2021 and 2023 and includes results from structured clinical audits of approximately 7,000 computed tomography (CT) referrals (medical imaging test or 'scan') submitted to radiological institutions in seven EU countries. It aims to identify whether a certain percentage of exposure to medical radiation has been “unjustified”. The publication also includes an overview of scanner justification systems in each EU country, suggestions for improvement and practical advice for imaging departments.
