On Tuesday 3 September, the European Commission launched a public consultation and a call for evidence in order to obtain information on the current European rules on energy security, and in particular on security of supply.
The consultation will be open for 12 weeks, until 26 November, and aims to gather the views of stakeholders in order to carry out a general “fitness check” of the existing rules, which include the regulation on the security of gas supply, the regulation on risk preparedness in the electricity sector, as well as the emergency measures taken under REPowerEU (see EUROPE 13438/16).
“It is an opportune moment to identify synergies, deficiencies and efficiency gains within the EU legislative framework and to consider lessons learned from the Covid-19 and energy crises”, the European Commission explains in a press release.
This assessment will also help to define the priorities of the next European Commission, including the construction of a new, clean industrial Union.
The public consultation aims to gather more targeted information on the energy security framework and will be supplemented by meetings with stakeholders in specialist forums.
