04/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 3 September, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, confirmed “the EU’s enduring support for Somalia, its security transition and step-up in related duties”, following a remote meeting with the Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. “We agreed on the need to avoid regional tensions while fighting terrorism and preserving Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity”, he said via the X network. This statement comes a week after Ethiopia warned Somalia against aggravating tensions in the Horn of Africa, in response to Egypt sending, as part of an African Union mission, military aid to Somalia, which is facing attacks from the al-Shabab Islamists, as reported by AFP on Wednesday 28 August.
