The European Union has released a further €122 million in humanitarian aid for the Greater Horn of Africa, as the region continues to suffer the consequences of conflict and climate-related disasters such as droughts and floods, the Commission announced in a press release on Thursday 22 August.
The funding will be used to provide food aid and to meet other water and sanitation needs in areas particularly exposed to the risk of epidemics.
It is intended in particular for partners working in Ethiopia (€42 million), Somalia (€40 million) and South Sudan (€40 million).
This additional funding “brings the total EU aid to the Greater Horn of Africa to more than €421 million so far this year, including a reinforcement of over €56 million mobilised in April in response to the consequences of the crisis in Sudan”, adds the press release. Over 70 million people need immediate humanitarian aid in this area. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
