GDP up by 0.3% in second quarter in euro area and EU

In the second quarter of 2024, seasonally-adjusted GDP rose by 0.3% in the euro area and the European Union, compared with the previous quarter, according to the flash estimate published by the EU’s statistical office (Eurostat) in mid-August.

In the first quarter of 2024, GDP also rose by 0.3% in both areas.

Of the 22 countries for which data are available, Latvia (-1.1%), Sweden (-0.8%), Hungary (-0.2%) and Germany (-0.1%) recorded a fall in growth in the second quarter. Wealth creation, on the other hand, was highest in Poland (1.5%), Ireland (1.2%), the Netherlands (1.0%) and Lithuania (0.9%). It was strong in Spain (0.8%) and moderate in France (0.3%) and Italy (0.2%).

Employment. Over the same period, the number of people in employment rose by 0.2% in the euro area and the EU compared with the first quarter. In the first quarter, employment rose by 0.3% in both zones. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
