European Commission launches a consultation to contribute to its future AI Code of Practice

On Tuesday 30 July, the European Commission announced that it had launched a call for contributions to its future ‘Code of Practice’ for European suppliers of general-purpose artificial intelligence (GPAI) models.

It is inviting GPAI service providers operating in the EU, businesses, civil society representatives, rightsholders and academic experts to share their views and conclusions so that they can provide input on the future text.

This Code of Practice, which is provided for under the AI Act, should address issues such as model transparency, copyright rules, risk identification, assessment and mitigation, and internal risk management.

The Commission has also stated that the consultation’s results will be taken into account in the work of the AI Office, which will oversee the implementation and application of the AI Act rules relating to GPAI models (see EUROPE 13419/7).

The AI Act will officially come into force on 1 August, and the Commission hopes to finalise its ‘Code of Practice’ by 2025.
