Predator spyware – RSF deplores Greek Supreme Court’s finding that Greek government was not involved in eavesdropping operation

On Tuesday 30 July, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) deplored the Greek Supreme Court’s decision to clear the intelligence service under the authority of Greek Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis of responsibility for the Predatorgate scandal, named after the spyware suspected of having been used to eavesdrop on journalists, opponents and members of civil society (see EUROPE 13122/7).

Greek Supreme Court prosecutor Georgia Adeilini announced that the investigation had revealed no involvement of any government department in the use or purchase of the illegal Predator spyware found on the phones of many Greek politicians, journalists and businessmen, the Greek media outlet Ekathimerini reported.

The substantial evidence clearly indicates that no state service, including the National Intelligence Service (EYP), the Anti-Terrorist Unit or the Greek Police (Ministry of Citizen Protection), was involved with Predator spyware or any other similar software”, the Supreme Court said on the same day.

The European Parliament had launched a committee of inquiry into the Pegasus spyware in April 2022, before further revelations about the use of Israeli Predator software (see EUROPE 12934/6). (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
