Emmanuel Macron proposes Thierry Breton for second term as European Commissioner

30/07/2024 (Agence Europe)On 25 July, French President Emmanuel Macron wrote to the President-elect of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirming that he was nominating outgoing Commissioner Thierry Breton as France’s candidate for the post of European Commissioner. “Thierry Breton, through his own individual qualities and his experience, particularly during the previous term of office, has demonstrated the general competence and European commitment that will enable him to continue to carry out independently the important responsibilities that you may wish to entrust to him within the College of Commissioners”, he explained in his letter. On 24 July, in letters to European leaders, Ms von der Leyen asked for two candidates per country, one man and one woman, unless they proposed the current Commissioner for a new term.
