On Tuesday 30 July, the European Commission announced that it had approved funding of €2.4 million to help the people worst affected by the floods that have hit South Asia in recent days.
“The beginning of this year’s monsoon season is proving very hard for people in the north of Bangladesh, India and in the Philippines. The EU is stepping up its assistance to the most affected populations, so they can receive much needed-relief”, said the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
This funding will be used to provide cash aid, food, access to drinking water and sanitation, and other essential services in the hardest-hit areas, the Commission announced.
On Tuesday morning, landslides killed 93 people and injured 128 others in the southern Indian state of Kerala, AFP reported.
In the Philippines, uninterrupted monsoon rains brought by Typhoon Gaemi hit the north of the country on Wednesday 24 July.
Almost a third of Bangladesh was also affected by flooding caused by Cyclone Remal last May. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
