European Commission registers two ECIs, including one in favour of ‘cellular meat’

On Wednesday 24 July, the European Commission decided to register two European citizens’ initiatives (ECIs) entitled ‘Stop Cruelty Stop Slaughter’ and ‘Stop Fake Food: Origin on Label’.

The organisers of the ‘Stop Cruelty Stop Slaughter’ initiative (https://aeur.eu/f/d4a ) are calling on the Commission to introduce measures to encourage the production of plant proteins, in particular milk and egg substitutes of plant origin, as well as the production of cultivated meat.

The organisers of the ECI on the end of fake food (https://aeur.eu/f/d4b ) are calling for measures to ensure that European consumers have access to transparent information on the foodstuffs they buy, and that their expectations in terms of food quality and sustainability are met. The initiative also calls for clear and explicit labelling of the origin of all products and consistent environmental, health and labour standards in the internal market.

If, within a year, the ECI receives at least one million declarations of support in at least seven different Member States, the Commission will have to react. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
