EU reintroduces tariff quotas on Ukrainian eggs and sugar

Imports of Ukrainian sugar and eggs into the European Union have reached the limits beyond which they can no longer benefit from exemption from customs duties (see EUROPE 13438/31).

There are limits on the amount of poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, maize, porridge and honey that can be consumed. Oats, sugar and eggs have well exceeded the limits since the beginning of 2024. This is why tariffs will apply again to these products from 2 July.

The tariff quotas in the EU/Ukraine trade agreement are those that should, in principle, apply, but these volumes set by the agreement have also been exceeded.

Therefore, until the end of 2024, the EU will apply the basic tariff applied to all partner countries (without a trade agreement), in accordance with the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO). From 1 January 2025, the EU will be able to revert to the tariff quotas set out in the trade agreement with Ukraine, which allow up to 9,662 tonnes of eggs and 109,438 tonnes of sugar to be imported duty-free.
