European Commission proposes technical amendment to EU/Mauritania fisheries agreement

On Tuesday 18 June, the European Commission adopted a proposal to make a technical amendment to Regulation 2021/2061 on the allocation of the fishing opportunities provided for in the Protocol implementing the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

The duration of the implementation protocol is five years from its provisional application, i.e. until 15 November 2026 (see EUROPE 13410/36). The EU fleet is authorised to fish shrimp, demersal species, tuna and small pelagics in Mauritanian waters, up to a total quantity of 287,050 tonnes per year. The total allowable catch (TAC) for fishing category 1 (crustaceans, except lobsters) is 5,000 tonnes per year.

The proposal aims to increase the maximum number of vessels that can be deployed in Mauritanian waters at any one time from the current 15 to 18 for category 1 - vessels fishing for crustaceans, with the exception of lobsters: Spain 4,150 tonnes, Italy 600 tonnes and Portugal 250 tonnes.

The proposed new regulation will apply from 8 December 2023 (retroactive application).
