Across the EU, the pace of digital literacy is accelerating, but there are still major disparities. These are the findings of the Commission’s latest publication, dated Friday 24 May, on “Digitisation in Europe”.
Using a range of statistics, the study details digital habits and the integration of these services and artificial intelligence into everyday life.
According to the data collected, “44% of EU citizens do not have basic digital skills”, although in 2023 over 90% of them used the Internet “at least once a week”.
On the business side, some EU countries see their businesses using digital tools far more often than others. In Sweden, 80% of them are considered to have a high level, compared with just 27% in Romania.
On the question of AI, at this stage, only 8% of EU companies are using AI intensively. The two countries furthest ahead on this issue are Denmark and Finland, with a figure of 15%.
