In a statement published on Thursday 23 May, members of the High-Level Group for the Digital Markets Act (DMA) say they want to keep a close eye on recent developments relating to AI, which has an impact “on fair and contestable digital markets”.
The group, formed in March 2023 and made up of European regulators responsible for competition, personal data and consumer protection, states that AI is capable of bringing “considerable societal benefits and tremendous opportunities for innovation”, while posing significant risks including “bias, discrimination, fraud, manipulation and loss of control over personal data”. This dichotomy also affects the service providers affected by the DMA.
The group says it will continue to monitor AI-related services developed by gatekeepers in the future, to ensure that they “comply with the law and its objectives in order to preserve contestability and incentives for innovation”.
The possibility of creating a sub-group specialising in interference between AI and DMA was raised at the end of the statement.
