The British and Spanish governments are moving closer to an agreement on future travel rules between the British enclave of Gibraltar and Spain, the two governments and the European Commission, which is hosting the talks in Brussels, said in a joint statement on the evening of Thursday 16 May.
The discussions took place in “a constructive atmosphere and resulted in significant progress, with additional areas of agreement”, according to the joint document. “All parties are reassured that the agreement is moving closer and will work closely and quickly on the remaining issues towards a comprehensive agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom,” the text adds.
This statement comes after discussions between the Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, the British and Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministers, David Cameron and José Manuel Albares, and the Head of Government of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo.
The Vice-President of the Commission has also held regular discussions with his British counterpart on the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement and the Windsor Protocol, which settled the Northern Ireland question.
