EPHA analyses strengths and weaknesses of European political parties’ health programmes

On Thursday 16 May, the European Public Health Alliance ( EPHA) analysed the health manifestos of the main European political parties in the run-up to the European elections in June.

In particular, the analysis shows the potential gaps on public health issues during the next parliamentary term.

The manifestos analysed are those of the European People’s Party (EPP), the Party of European Socialists (PES), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the European Green Party (EGP) and the European Left (EL).

In particular, the EPP manifesto is criticised for not referring to the concept of health in all its policies and for ignoring the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

As for the PES ideas, EPHA is pleased to note a call to strengthen the Health Union and guarantee quality healthcare and public services accessible to all.

Public health is not considered a priority in the ALDE manifesto, even though some elements could, to a certain extent, contribute to it, notes EPHA.

This approach to health in all policies is well reflected in the EGP programme, as is the consideration of equity in health and the fight against discrimination and poverty.

The EL manifesto “fails to address the EU’s greatest health burden: non-communicable diseases (NCDs)”, regrets EPHA.
