07/05/24 (Agence Europe) – In an open letter published on Monday, 6 May, European public transport representatives call on EU institutions to support their sector. The European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA), the association European Passenger Transport Operators (EPTO), the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the international association of public transport UITP (Union Internationale des Transports Publics), and European city networks Eurocities and POLIS assert that public transport deserves special attention during the next legislative period. In their letter, they propose several initiatives, including recognition of public transport’s strategic importance, the publication of a European Declaration on Public Transport, strengthened coordination among European institutions and local stakeholders, and adequate funding for new technology and infrastructure.
