22/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – “Extremely concerned” by the violence that has rocked Haiti since early February (see EUROPE 13368/30), on Friday 22 March the Heads of State or Government of the countries of the European Union encouraged the “efforts” underway to put in place “a viable, inclusive and sustainable Haitian-led political transition plan” (see EUROPE 13370/5). The European Council is calling on all the political forces in Haiti to show “responsibility” by reaching a compromise to agree on a political transition “in the best interests of the country and its long-suffering population”. EU leaders have stressed the importance of Kenya deploying security forces to Haiti (see EUROPE 13373/5) as armed groups continue to extend their influence in Port-au-Prince.
