On Thursday 21 March, ECR MEPs signed a Charter of Values in Subiaco, Italy, reaffirming the fundamental values of the conservative political family. This charter sets out a series of fundamental principles of conservatism and confirms their commitment to “fostering a stable, just and harmonious community”.
“On the day we celebrate St Benedict, the patron Saint of Europe, we are here to remember that Europe was born thanks to the Benedictines who preserved Europe’s classical and religious culture, creating a true political unity”, emphasised Nicola Procaccini, ECR Co-President.
In the charter, ECR states that it is essential to limit any undue interference in order to preserve the unique cultural and historical identities of our Member States and guarantee national sovereignty. It is firmly opposed to “a European Union intended as a tool for the realisation of a globalist agenda aiming to impose progressive single thinking and ethical relativism”.
On ecology, ECR wants to develop pragmatic, science-based policies that recognise the central role of people in balancing environmental sustainability and economic growth.
Finally, it champions the traditional family, the protection of the right to life and is firmly opposed to “attempts to deconstruct the inherent distinctions between male and female”.
