The eighth Clean Transition Dialogue, which took place on Friday 22 March, was devoted to decarbonisation of the steel sector, brought together representatives of European steel producers, clean energy suppliers, buyers, social partners and financial institutions.
Inaugurated by the President of the Commission in her annual speech on the state of the European Union in 2023, the Clean Transition Dialogues constitute a framework within which the Commission communicates with stakeholders on how to implement the ‘European Green Deal’.
The meeting, which was chaired by Executive Vice-Presidents, Margrethe Vestager, responsible for Competition, and Maroš Šefčovič, responsible for the ‘Green Deal’, provided an opportunity to exchange views with stakeholders and relevant Member States about the difficulties currently facing the steel industry.
In order to meet these challenges and drive forward the sector’s transition to clean energy, a number of commitments have been made. As Mr Šefčovič detailed on X (formerly Twitter), this will involve encouraging demand for green steel products and their standardisation, restoring a level playing field, ensuring clean and affordable energy, and combining financial instruments.
