During a workshop organised on Tuesday 19 March by the Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs for the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), progress made on the Union’s five equality strategies was examined.
Four Commission representatives opened the event.
Annelisa Cotone, representing the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, opened the discussion by highlighting the EU’s commitment to inclusion and equality, aimed at drawing strength from diversity and forging a just society.
She mentioned the efforts made to eliminate violence against women, combat wage disparities and promote gender equality in the labour market.
Michaela Moua, coordinator of the EU Action Plan against Racism, presented this first programme to openly acknowledge structural racism and emphasised the intersectional approach.
Katharina von Schnurbein, coordinator of the EU strategy against antisemitism, expressed her concern at the increase in antisemitic attacks and called for collective action to counter them.
For her part, Marion Lalisse, coordinator of the fight against Islamophobia, reported good cooperation in integrating the fight against discrimination against Muslims into various areas.
