On Wednesday 20 March, the European Commission unveiled guidelines for the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). These guidelines have been drawn up in collaboration with the countries of the European Research Area and stakeholders in the research ecosystem.
They are based on principles already formulated in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and the Guidelines for Trustworthy AI: reliability, honesty, respect and accountability.
In particular, researchers are advised to remain ultimately responsible for the scientific results they present and to be transparent in their use of AI. They are required to respect privacy, confidentiality and intellectual property rights. Researchers are also invited to keep abreast of developments in the field.
In particular, research organisations are invited to promote and monitor the responsible use of generative AI within their organisation.
Funding bodies, for their part, should help applicants to use generative AI responsibly.
These guidelines will be updated to take account of feedback from research stakeholders. An online form has been set up to collect contributions.
