21/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 20 March, the US company Google was fined €250 million by the French competition authority. The latter is accusing the US giant of failing to meet its commitments in terms of neighbouring rights, which allow the media – newspapers, magazines and press agencies – to be remunerated when their content is re-used online. The competent French authority considers that Google did not negotiate “in good faith, on the basis of transparent criteria” with press publishers to assess their level of remuneration. For its part, the US company considered that the amount of the fine was “disproportionate to the breaches identified”. (TM)
