On Wednesday 20 March, the French association Bloom, which is active in the field of climate change and the fight against the destruction of the oceans, published a report in which it points out that the European Parliament is highly fragmented when it comes to environmental issues.
The report, based on an analysis of MEPs’ votes on some 150 amendments tabled by them or by the European Commission on legislative dossiers relating to oceans, climate, biodiversity and environmental justice, tends to show that the Greens/EFA Group and The Left group overwhelmingly supported proposals to amend texts deemed to be in the interests of protecting the planet.
Whilst the S&D has a very good score (16.6/20, compared to 19.8 and 19 respectively for the Greens/EFA and the Left), the report stresses that the socialist group can do better. Renew Europe, described as ‘hypocritical’ by the report, is criticised by Bloom. “The voting pattern of its members is highly inconsistent: while some of its members vote resolutely in favour of environmentally friendly positions, an equally large number of its members align themselves with much less enlightened positions”, the document concludes with regard to the centrists.
The EPP (3.8/20), ECR (2.5) and ID (3.3) groups, for their part, close the gap, according to the results of the report.
