At the European Summit of Regions and Cities in Mons on Tuesday 19 March, the European Alliance of Cities and Regions for the Reconstruction of Ukraine called for a decentralised approach to the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Regional and local authorities should receive intensive support to enable them to play a meaningful role in the process (see EUROPE 13351/16).
The series of recommendations, drawn up jointly by EU and Ukrainian regions and cities and their associations, as well as by the Congress of the Council of Europe, was presented during debates held at the European Summit of Regions and Cities to the Ukrainian Deputy Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructures, Oleksandra Azarkhina, and to Georg Milbradt, German Special Envoy to Ukraine for Decentralisation, representing Svenja Schulze, German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
In June, Germany will host the annual Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC), at which the EU, G7 countries and other supporters of Ukraine will coordinate their financial support for the country’s reconstruction.
