European Parliament’s Environment and Industry Committees approve provisional interinstitutional agreement on regulation on reduction of methane emissions

11/01/24 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 11 January, MEPs on the European Parliament’s Environment (ENVI) and Industry (ITRE) Committees approved the provisional agreement reached in mid-November on the regulation to reduce methane emissions (see EUROPE 13293/5), with 91 votes in favour, 10 against and 6 abstentions. Applicable from 2027, the text requires operators to detect, report and repair methane leaks in accordance with strict specifications. It targets the oil, gas and coal production and transmission chain. Stringent restrictions are imposed on the evacuation and flaring of methane. EU oil and gas importers will have to prove their compliance with European monitoring and reporting standards, with penalties for importers who fail to meet emissions thresholds from 2030.
